Rock Climbing Wall
Rock Climbing Wall: An Artificial Construction
By Brad Jones
The rock climbing wall is not a natural rock but is artificially made and has grips for the hands and feet and is used for climbing. The rock climbing wall is normally made out of brick or wood but there are many modern walls in which the wall may be made out of a thick multiplex board that have holes drilled into it at intervals that are regular and they usually have a place for attaching a belay rope though it can also be used for practicing lead climbing or bouldering. Every hole has a special t-nut that permits modular hand holds to be screwed into the wall.
Different Textured Products Make Up The Surface Of The Wall
The surface of the rock climbing wall is covered with many different textured products that may be made of concrete and be painted as well as be polyurethane, loaded with sand. The rock climbing wall may also have extra surface structures like incuts, which are small indentions as well as bulges or protrusions or they may be shaped as an overhang, underhang or crack. Very often the grip is made such that it exactly resembles the conditions of the outdoor rocks and these may include oversized grips as well as other grips that are bolted in.
The practice of the indoors rock climbing wall was first conceptualized in the UK and the first one was built in 1964 at Leeds University by a lecturer called Don Robinson and what he did was to insert pieces of rock into a corridor wall. This was followed by commercial rock climbing walls being built in Sheffield, England which is a traditional rock climbing center mainly because it lies close to the Peak District. In modern times, climbing gyms are found in nearly every large US city and they have also spread to other countries and gym climbing, using the rock climbing wall is becoming ever more popular as an urban sport that allows people to try out various aspects of the rock climbing sport.
There are different types of rock climbing walls that have different holds as well as wall surfaces. The most simple of these is the plywood construction and is called in the lingua franca as a ‘woody’ and has a mix of bolt-on-holds as well as screw-on-holds. The bolt-on-hold is fixed to the wall with the help of one or more iron bolts that are inserted through the concerned holds. Screw-on-holds are smaller due to the way they are fixed and this is done by connecting the hold to the wall with the help of screws that are screwed into the surface of the wall, directly. There are also rock climbing walls made of slabs of granite, concrete sprayed on to wire mesh as well as fiberglass walls.
