Preschool Activities and Games
The Difference Preschool Activities and Games Make in the Personality of a Child
By Rosemary Phillips
The best preschool centers are those which teach children with the help of preschool activities and games, and make learning fun. Young children have a very small attention span, and teaching them academics has always been met with resistance. However, the same children embrace learning when it is imparted to them through preschool activities and games.
The Importance of Fun in Learning
Children learn every day, right from the day they are born. They are innately curious about their surroundings, and they are avid learners when they have to be. “Have to” is not measured by the adult yard stick; rather it is measured by their need to do something, to achieve something, to please those whom they love.
This is how they learn to talk, to walk, to use the potty, to drink from a cup, to use a fork, and so on. There are many lessons the children absorb from their environment based on their need to know.
There are other things that they learn because they want acceptance from the people they love. These lessons are eating from the plate, abstaining from writing on the walls, keeping their toys in order, not breaking their toys, and so on.
The third type of learning is through preschool activities and games. This is the learning they get while they are in the preschool centers. It has been observed that these preschool activities and games are received best when they involve the participation of the children.
For example, you want to teach the children to spell, or recognize letters? Instead of using games which spell, involve them in a competition where they are required to hut for the right letter from a box, or tray.
Similarly, the more fun it is the better. Bake biscuits in the shape of numbers and letters, then spell the child’s name or write his/her birthday and see how much they love it – and how fast they learn it.
Using preschool activities and games which translate learning into fun can make a world of difference to the child’s way of looking at school later on in life. The first impression stays long with children, and the way they perceive learning in their preschool days would impact their outlook and receptiveness to learning throughout their lives.
Children who drop out of school are most often introduced to learning abruptly and though imposed discipline. On the other hand, it was observed that children who were eased in the world of academics through fun are more likely to complete their studies. Hence, preschool activities and games make a very critical difference in the life of a child.
