Day Care and Preschool
What’s Right? Finding the Ideal Day Care and Preschool
By Rosemary Phillips
Enrolling your child in the right day care and preschool is important, because not only is the child’s well-being and education at stake, but the parent’s peace of mind, as well. Busy working moms and dads feel guilty enough leaving for their jobs, and leaving their kids with strangers adds stress, so it’s vital that the day care and preschool that a parent trusts his children with be the ideal place, with strong emphasis on child development.
Special Children Have Special Needs
Searching for the right day care and preschool can be even more difficult if you live with a child with special needs. There are many accredited centers that work with children with special needs. The best thing to do is for the parent to visit these places himself and to meet with the teachers, so that he can put his mind at rest from any fears. Leaving a child with someone else, after being the sole person in a baby’s life, is going to be emotional for both the child and the parent.
Thus, it’s important that the parent has trust and confidence in the day care and preschool, and that he or she feels good about leaving a child there. Children with special needs often require personnel with extra education, and depending on the child’s specific needs, an interview with the director or principal of the day care and preschool would also be beneficial. This way the parent knows more about the school and its mission, and the center knows the expectations of the parent.
How Competitive Do You Want Your Toddler to Be?
The cliché of the trendy Manhattan moms putting their children on a waiting list of an exclusive day care and preschool shows a potentially damaging side effect of our culture’s emphasis on material and financial success. These superstar day care centers are often excellent places that employ brilliant professionals.
However, placing a child, that still might be crawling, on a treadmill toward success might not be the best way to foster a child’s sense of confidence and values. Instruction is also key, and while the Beverly Hills day care and preschool can boast a great curriculum, so can the preschool in blue-collar Brooklyn. More low-key centers, as well as, public institutions are often excellent alternatives. The most important part of taking care of a child is affection and security.
