Microdermabrasion

What is Microdermabrasion?
By Andrew Kelly

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive epidermal treatment. A microdermabrasion machine blasts clinical grade, sterile, crystals, of zinc or aluminum oxide, onto the surface of the skin using a gentle stream of air. The crystals exfoliate the skin removing the uppermost layer of dead and damaged skin cells.

The action of the microdermabrasion machine stimulates the deeper layers of the skin to produce more collagen and elastine which makes the skin supple and more youthful. The skin's color and overall appearance is far healthier as the lackluster dead skin cells have been removed revealing the new skin cells.

Unlike other skin resurfacing procedures, such as dermabrasion, laser resurfacing and chemical peels, microdermabrasion is extremely unlikely to have any complications. [When administered by a skin care professional there should never be any complications I have said "extremely unlikely" here to highlight the dangers of the misuse of the home microdermabrasion kits available on the market today - see later]. In the U.S.A. only licensed professionals can offer microdermabrasion using expensive FDA-approved devices.

Microdermabrasion is progressive, as the treatment is gentle and non-invasive, it can be repeated regularly with each session bringing further enhancements to the skin. It is usual for a consultant to recommend between 10 or 12 thirty minute sessions. By comparison, to the other skin resurfacing treatments mentioned above, microdermabrasion is now available much cheaper. Due to the low price microdermabrasion is no longer restricted to the rich and famous and virtually anyone is now able to afford it.

Due to the ever increasing popularity of salon microdermabrasion the large skin care companies are producing home microdermabrasion products to add to and complement their skin care product range. However these "microdermabrasion products" are often nothing more than highly abrasive exfoliating creams rather than true microdermabrasion. These creams can improve the skin but the effects are not long lasting, on product advice usually says use daily compared to the bi-weekly or monthly sessions with salon microdermabrasion. The results can not be compared to salon microdermabrasion which works in a completely different way to the creams.

There are some home microdermabrasion machines coming onto the market but great care must be taken when using them, they should not be used too often and the correct materials must always be used. Furthermore the home user is not equipped with the high quality training and education that the salon consultant or doctor has had. A very serious consideration must also be insurance, if something does go wrong with a home microdermabrasion kit you only really have yourself to blame. If, in the incredibly unlikely even that something goes wrong in the salon they are supported by insurance and equipped to deal with any problems immediately.
