The Benefits of Microdermabrasion
By Andrew Kelly
It is something of an urban myth that if you cover the whole surface of your skin with gold paint you will die. This was explored by a group of guys called the myth busters and they decided that it was highly likely. This is very interesting as it highlights the importance of the skin to our overall health. The skin is the largest organ of the body and performs many functions. When something goes wrong with our skin the effects can be devastating. Caught with an outbreak of acne before an important public occasion many people would cancel rather than be seen with active acne. The general public are vicious when it comes to acne, this is more obvious when we look to our celebrities and the onslaught of the press (especially in the United Kingdom) when one of their photographers manages to photograph a star with a spot on their face.
Our general feelings towards age are that we would rather look young and attractive until we die. People can go to extreme lengths to maintain a youthful appearance. The face is the most prominent part of our body which everybody sees and therefore most cosmetic surgery concentrates on this area. Procedures such as face-lifts and botox are now becoming everyday occurrences and even with the shocking horrors when things go wrong, their popularity seems to be increasing unabated.
Wouldn't it be great if there was a non-surgical solution to ageing, a cure for Acne, wrinkles and fine lines, skin discoloration and all of those irritating minor imperfections in our skin? Microdermabrasion may be that solution, it may not be 100% effective against such things as deep wrinkles or really bad acne scarring but, when used together with a good skin care regime, it can almost get there!
Microdermabrasion has many advantages over other skin care solutions. The primary advantage is that it is safe! Safety should always be considered when looking at skin care. Many people take incredible risks trying to maintain youthful looking skin and ignore the risks, often with terrible consequences. Sometimes people take shortcuts and disregard the long term. This is most clear when we look at the continuing popularity of sun beds, yes you may have a nice tan but to what expense? [Long term use of sun beds and over exposure to the sun have been proven to speed up the aging of the skin and can lead to skin cancer]. The only known side-effect of microdermabrasion is that some people experience a small amount of short-term redness or swelling of the skin but this can be avoided by application of moisturizers and lotions following a treatment.
The next considerations should be the effectiveness of the treatment. Some skin care products promise you the earth but fail to deliver. Microdermabrasion has proven results with incredible improvements to the skin possible after the first session in the salon. Nearly every salon that offers microdermabrasion keeps a few before and after photographs so it is always worth asking before you have made your final decision to proceed. You only need to spend some time visiting sites on the Internet to find amazing before/after shots and read some of the uplifting success stories. Microdermabrasion is now so popular that you may even know somebody who uses it already, ask about their experience. You will soon find that microdermabrasion has been proved to improve the skin, reducing or removing completely fine lines and wrinkles, acne, skin discoloration and many other skin problems. However microdermabrasion is not the everlasting fountain of youth as it can not work absolute miracles such as the removal of deep wrinkles that would require invasive cosmetic surgery but it can improve them ;-)
To keep things simple I will keep these benefits to a minimum of 3. We have considered the safety (1) of microdermabrasion and it's effectiveness (2) and now we come to the cost (3). You would expect that such a safe and effective treatment would be very expensive and only available to the rich or famous. While microdermabrasion fans include many celebs it is not exclusive to them. Compared to other treatments such as dermabrasion, laser treatments and even cosmetic surgery, microdermabrasion it incredibly cheap and available to all. Although most salons say that 10-12 treatments would be best, this is usually over an extended period (sometimes 12 months) and you may find that you are happy with the results after only five or six. Furthermore it is now possible to purchase home kits and treatments that use the principles of microdermabrasion. While these may not be as effective as a salon treatment you may find that their best use is following a couple of sessions at the salon.
In conclusion the 3 main benefits of microdermabrasion are that it is extremely safe, amazingly effective and surprisingly cheap. I could have written more about the amazing effectiveness of it but, at the end of the day, the decision is yours to make. If you are thinking about using microdermabrasion I think you should spend the time looking at the incredible successes and reading the wonderful stories of how good microdermabrasion really is. From this you may be lucky enough to find a salon near you that offers the service.
