Massage Therapy Program
Learn About Your Options Before Choosing Your Massage Therapy Program
By Elizabeth Penning
When you decide to go for a massage therapy program ensure that you have understood what choices you have out there. First of all the massage therapy courses can be divided into two major parts, i.e. the basic massage therapy program and the advanced massage therapy program. The courses are offered as full time, part-time (for those who have full time jobs and cannot leave it) and even distance learning.
The Vastness Of The Subject
Before deciding the exact line you are going to follow, be sure you know what you can take up – offline and online. The basic massage therapy program would normally include courses on health and hygiene, anatomy and physiology, hydrotherapy, reflexology, ayurveda, essential oils and aromatherapy, clinical analysis, among others and may require some 500 hours of theory and practice before you are eligible to apply for a license to practice.
The advanced massage therapy program would involve specialization courses such as pregnancy massage, prenatal and infant massage, Thai massage, Shiastu, Chinese massage, neuromuscular massage, geriatric massage, lymphatic drainage, craniosacral therapy, myofascial release and even animal massage. The advanced courses have a great deal of theory classes, equally matched by hands-on practical classes where the student learns to apply correctly the theory taught.
Each branch has its own demand at national and international level. A good school will normally help its students gain a foothold in the industry by putting them into contact with leading hotels, spas and clients where massage therapy is in high demand. The good news is that this profession is having a phenomenal growth rate in demand while the supply rate is still very slow. This gives the budding professionals a good head start in the career, plus the assurance of a successful career.
Now, before you decide what massage therapy program you will sign for, go through the collected information and check out what you really want; what makes you happy; what would kindle the most interest in you. Once you get that answer, then you pursue your dream on four cylinders. If you find that none of the above appeals to you, then look for something which does.
A massage therapist is a highly respected professional and the degree would mean that you are a little short of a doctor – the advanced massage therapy program is so comprehensive. You will need to have some 1000 training hours before you can practice on your own as a specialist; and you will also need a license (to be a Licensed Massage Therapist) before you start your career.
