By Elizabeth Penning

Deep tissue massage is not for everyone but it certainly has it’s benefits for many who are suffering from chronic pain, muscle cramping and increase mobility of muscles that may not be functioning as well as they should do to pain or tightness.

What Is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage in many ways is similar to a classic massage but it moves slower and works deeper into the muscles in order to relieve tight muscles and pain. Some complain of soreness after a deep tissue massage but most feel the soreness is a small price to pay when looking at the bigger picture and the noticeable reduction of muscle pain and increased energy. Deep tissue massage helps reduce pain from various medical conditions and is often recommended by doctors to their patients who are suffering from chronic pain and other conditions.

Fibromyalgia

Patients with fibromyalgia are discovering the benefits of deep tissue massage and finding they are able to live with less pain and more energy due to this technique.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes intense pain and fatigue and while deep tissue massage is not a cure for this condition it is a way to reduce some of the misery that is associated with the condition.

Cramping

Muscles cramp for various reasons including injury, over activity and shifts in body fluids. Before deciding on deep tissue massage to relieve your cramping consult your doctor and ask them to determine if you have any kind of injury that might be irritated by a deep tissue massage. Deep tissue massage can assist those cramping muscles in their function of contracting and releasing. Cramping is your muscles way of telling you that they are unable to release properly.

Carpal Tunnel

Carpal Tunnel is curable and does not always require surgery to heal the muscles and nerves that have been overworked to the point of causing pain and numbness. The main cause is a compressed nerve in the wrist that works its way up the arm. While doctors generally begin therapy with an anti-inflammatory drug and some form of brace there is more you can do to reduce your need for surgery. Deep tissue massage can work the muscles in the area both relieving pain and assist them to function normally again. Even though deep tissue massage will assist in reducing the need for surgery also make sure you continue with your doctors recommended treatment, the massage is not intended to replace your medical treatment instead it is a safe and effective addition to the treatment.

If you are suffering from any kind of chronic pain and even fatigue due to the pain consider trying at least one session with a massage therapist that practices the deep tissue massage technique. The worst thing that can happen is that you leave more relaxed than when you went in.
