Low Fat or Low Carb Diet
Which Diet to Choose: Low Fat or Low Carb?
By M. A. Fulmar
When you make the decision to lose weight, you want to find a program that will be the most effective for you. With the variety of plans on the market for dieting – from low fat to low carb – it can be difficult to know what program to choose. Before you can get started on the optimum program, you need to educate yourself about the pros and cons of each type of plan.
Things to think about while you are doing your research include: your own personal tastes in food, how easy the plan will be to stick with, and the convenience of the program for your lifestyle. The bottom line is that you want to embark on a weight loss program that will not be unpleasant for you, and will be fairly easy to work into your current routine. This will make it much more likely that you will actually stick with the plan that you select as this is the key to any successful diet.
Low Fat vs. Low Carb Diets
When one thinks about weight loss, two basic programs come to mind. Low fat and low carb diets have found themselves in conflict for many years, with many studies as to how effective each type of program is. Generally, you cannot have it both ways, since low carb diets are usually quite high in fat, and low fat diets include many healthy carbs like whole grains and fruits. The bottom line may lie in which program appeals to the individual dieter. For some, a low carb diet may simply not work very well. For example, low carb diets are very difficult for vegetarians to stick with, since low carb choices can be greatly limited without fish, poultry and meat on the menu. A low fat diet may fit very nicely into a vegetarian menu, however.
Others may simply not enjoy the taste of meats and cheeses enough to allow them to keep on a low carb diet for very long. Low carb diets can also be hard on the digestive system, and some individuals may have more trouble with this than others. The advantage to a low carb diet over a low fat program may be the resulting weight loss. Often dieters on a low carb program will enjoy weight loss results that are quick and dramatic. This rate of loss does tend to taper off after the first six months.
On the other hand, some may see the benefit of a low carb diet over low fat programs. For example, those that suffer from hypoglycemia, high blood pressure and obesity may find that a low carb diet may be an effective treatment for their disorders. Whether you decide to go low fat or low carb in your diet plan, you should consult with your physician to determine which plan will be the healthiest for you. Either of these types of programs will also be much more effective if a regular exercise regimen is also included.
