Low Carb Diet
Educating Yourself about a Low Carb Diet
By M. A. Fulmar
There are many misconceptions regarding low carb diets and one may often imagine people eating foods that are perceived to be unhealthy that contain no vegetables or fruits and whose diet consists mainly of ice creams and bacon dripped in butter, right through the day.
Such diets would be flirting with danger that may take the form of heart attacks and would result in poor health. The low carb diet focuses mainly on nutrition in foods that are healthy and with more research being performed to find better health foods there is reason to be optimistic about the benefits of consuming low carb diets.
Low Carb Does Not Mean No Carb
The misconceptions regarding low carb diet may force a person to think that it is an attempt to eliminate carbohydrates, though this is far from the truth. Low carb diets such as Atkins induction is not a no-carb diet though it must be admitted that the amount of carbohydrates present in such a diet is pretty low and it is only meant to be consumed for no more than two weeks.
The point is that low carb diets is a broad term that includes most diet books such as Atkins, South Beach, Zone, Protein Power and many others and also includes eating plans that have loose formats that advise against consuming foods that are high in carbohydrates. Also, some of these diets may not contain much of carbohydrates while others generally focus on foods that may be rich in starch and sugar.
If one has arrived at a decision to have a low carb diet henceforth, then it may be time to consider a few steps that should help in achieving these goals including becoming better informed, deciding on the correct approach, getting familiar with what is allowable for consumption of food, planning the first week of the new diet, and getting support for achieving the goals set.
Since no one single diet may suit everyone there is need to consider whether the low carb diet is suitable for each individual case and for this one may need to study one’s own diet history to recognize whether the low carb diet is suitable or not. In addition, one may also need to study one’s own medical history to determine whether one has any medical condition that may preclude use of a low carb diet.
In addition, the family history may also shed light in this direction and conditions like diabetes or other health risks may help determine whether the low carb diet is feasible or not. Finally, one may need to answer the most important question of all which is whether one is totally dedicated and committed to undertaking such a course of action. If deep down there is no commitment, all the information, tips, support and recipes would be of little use and may condemn one to failure.
