High Protein Low Carb Diet Has Always Been Popular
By M. A. Fulmar

High protein low carb diets have had their heydays during the 1970s prior to the advent of saturated fats being closely associated with heart disease. Of late, the high protein low carb diet has once again found favor mainly because it helps in quicker initial weight loss which a person may achieve by using such a diet regime.

There are however doubts being raised by dieticians about what the long term effects on a person’s health would be when using carb-restricted weight loss plans. A few studies on the subject suggest that high protein low carb diets may not be quite so harmful and may in fact be of some benefit to the user and more long term studies on this topic are being undertaken to shed more light on the topic.

Worries about Short Term Weight Loss

There are certain worries that have been expressed whether the short term weight loss achieved by taking to a high protein low carb diet is nothing more than water loss and this may be attributed to the fact that when the body is starved of carbs it has to make use of energy taken from it’s glycogen stores and a gram of glycogen contains four grams of water attached and even though the effects of the weight loss may appear to be appealing it is nothing more than loss of water and when the carb intake resumes the water-weight gets regained. There is also concern been expressed that high protein low carb diets leads to more consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol than is necessary and this may induce or cause to induce heart diseases as well as certain types of cancer.

The high protein low carb diet food is based on eating plenty of proteins such as meat and eggs with little or no carbohydrates such as bread, potatoes, pasta and rice being consumed for some time, at the very least. In addition, the high protein low carb diet food may also contain large amounts of protein including red meats, fish, shellfish, eggs, cheese and poultry and also do not allow or limits pasta, bread, fruit, certain vegetables and potatoes as well as foods that contain much of refined sugar.

Skeptics point out that high protein low carb diet foods may result in unnecessary problems that includes mood changes that lead to cravings for carb-rich foods as well as snacks. However, there is not enough evidence to support the fact that high protein low carb diets are more beneficial than harmful; so make sure to follow a healthy diet when opting for a high protein low carb diet.
