While medications are frequently used for treating insomnia, temporary insomniac problems can be treated at home using simple and natural ingredients that do not have the risk of many side effects. Also the ingredients of insomnia home remedy do not have the risk of making the patient addicted or dependent on them. Following are some tried home remedies for sleeplessness.

Vitamin B

Vitamin B is essential for healthy nerves and their proper function. Its deficiency can cause sleeplessness and fatigue. Including adequate amount of vitamin B in diet is thus a natural cure for insomnia. Food sources of vitamin include wholegrain cereals, nuts, and pulses.

Curd

Curd is natural insomnia home remedy. Both eating it as diet and massaging the scalp with it induce good sleep.

Lettuce

Lettuce contains lectucarium, a sleep-inducing substance. Boil one tablespoon of lettuce seeds in half liter water. Boil the mixture till one third of it is left. Use it for inducing deep sleep. The juice of lettuce leaves also casts the same effect.

Milk and Honey

The tastiest natural insomnia home remedy is a glass of milk with added honey for sweetening. Take it some time before going to bed. If you cannot or do not want to drink sweet milk, use it to massage the soles of the feet.

Honey and Water

Add two teaspoons of honey to a glass of warm water and drink just before going to bed. You may also give this mixture to the children to help them sleep.

Aniseed Tea

Tea made from aniseed is an insomnia home remedy. To prepare it, boil about 400 ml of water in a container. Add a teaspoon of aniseed. Cover with a lid and simmer it for ten to fifteen minutes. Strain it and drink warm before going to bed or a little after the meal. Milk or honey may be added to make it more pleasant for the palate.

Fenugreek Leaves

Add one teaspoon of honey to two teaspoons of fenugreek leaves and drink before going to bed every night.

Bottle Gourd

Make bottle gourd juice with sesame oil in 1 to 1 ratio to prepare your own effective insomnia home remedy. Massage the scalp with this mixture daily at night. You can also cook the leaves of bottle gourd and use it as a vegetarian dish. It helps in treating insomnia via nutrition.

Rauwolfia

Rauwolfia is a valuable herb for treating insomnia. It has been used since ancient times for its sedative quality. Mix up to 0.5 gm powder of Rauwolfia root with cardamom and take at night before going to bed.
