Alcohol And Insomnia
Alcohol And Insomnia β Friends Of Foes
By M. A. Fulmar
People who suffer from insomnia will be able to tell you how frustrating it is to live through such bouts of sleeplessness. Thankfully, in most the cases, the insomnia is a temporary occurrence triggered by some sudden change in your mental or physical condition.
For example, if you have your Chairman calling for unscheduled reports and you are lagging behind, it is bound to give you some sleepless nights. Similarly, if anyone of your family has met with an accident and is seriously injured would result in insomnia as well. However, as soon as these problems are over, you will be back to your normal self.
Some Myths About Alcohol And Insomnia
Many people believe that alcohol and insomnia are not related since alcohol actually puts a person to sleep when it is consumed in excess. Yes, it is true that initially a person who consumes large amounts of alcoholic drinks would fall asleep or pass out as it is popularly known. However, if such binges are happening often enough, the effect will be drastically reversed.
The person in question will still pass out but will definitely wake up intermittently and have a very fitful sleep. For those who did not know, fitful sleep (or sleep which is not continuous for at least two hours) is also labeled as insomnia, because it is not satisfying enough.
Not only that, people who suffer from diseases such as blood pressure, indigestion and gastric problems, kidney problems, heart problems, and the like are prone to develop insomnia if alcohol is introduced in the diet on a regular basis.
It is clear from the above that alcohol and insomnia are quite thick friends. Therefore, if you are prone to insomnia attacks it would be good to stay away from alcoholic beverages at least 3-4 hours before bedtime, if not totally. Doctors usually warn about alcohol and insomnia problems, which unfortunately is most of the time ignored because the myth that surrounds this notion is so overpowering. The problem created by alcohol and insomnia becomes evident only after a long period of attacks when no other direct or indirect problem is found.
If you are among those who suffer from this type of insomnia, you should get immediate medical help since the insomnia would be cured only when your dependency on alcohol will be cured. While attempting the latter, you are bound to suffer from withdrawal symptoms which could mild or acute β and hence you might be tempted to go back to it if not having an alternative or remedy for it handy.
