Home Security Alarm System
Designing a Home Security Alarm System
By Arthur Sneddon
Security is a wonderful thing. Nothing is more fitting in a home than security. But, even with alarms, how do you achieve the perfect home security alarm system? More important than “security” or even “home” is the concept of “system.” Each home should have its own unique system to fit the needs of the family, the area and the home itself.
What Needs are There?
Every home has similar security needs, and the danger of intruders is always a worry. Another possible danger is fire, and as well, both radon gas and carbon monoxide pose dangers that can’t be detected by our senses. And what good is an alarm is no one is home when a problem occurs? How do lights and cameras fit in? First take a good look around the home, so that you can determine where the dangers lie.
A good home security alarm system depends on covering the weak links. Smoke detectors belong in every area where fire can happen as well as in the places where people need to be warned. So a smoke detector outside (not inside where burnt toast can set it off) the kitchen, near each fireplace.
At the back door where the barbeque or fire-pit is, in the basement near the furnace and hot water heater and near the dryer. Also, some of the smoke detectors can include a carbon monoxide detector for fireplace and furnace gases. See how a home security alarm system basically works?
Radon detectors belong in the basement. Radon occurs naturally from the ground. Your home security alarm system needs the usual burglar alarms that will sound when a door or window is opened, and you might want motion detectors in areas unused at night. Basement windows, garage entrances and pet doors are more susceptible to a breach not detected by the usual burglar alarm.
Motion detectors in hallways can cover that blind spot. Speaking of blind spots, your home security alarm system needs to cover the areas hidden by the landscaping. Trees and bushes can hide intruders, and lights help incredulously as well. Do you need to know who’s at the door? Your home security alarm system can use a camera at the front and back doors – with lights so you can see.
The next decision is about the alarms themselves: should they be wired or wireless? A wireless system is more flexible. Because of the computerized elements, your wireless home security alarm system can be programmed to call your work or cell phone if there is a problem at home. Decide what’s right for your home security alarm system and go with it.
