Attend a Workshop at Your Local Home Improvement Center
By Arthur Sneddon
Home improvement centers like Home Depot or Lowes are not just your one-stop-shopping place for tools, paint and light bulbs. They can also be a great place to take classes or attend workshops or do it yourself projects.
There are a myriad of different projects offered by home improvement centers to lure in buyers and of course sell some products. However, you are in no way obligated to buy any thing from the store if you attend a workshop. Most sessions at home improvement centers are free, others charge a nominal fee. However, most recommend that you register in advance so they know how many people to accept and can make arrangements accordingly
Advantages
The advantages of taking a class at a home improvement center, apart from the cost, is that because you see the project being completed in-store, if you like you can pick up the exact supplies on your way out and start your project the very same day. If you were to take a similar class at a community college or any other place you would have to make another trip to gather the supplies and still may not be able to find the exact same brand, size or color the instructor used.
As opposed to watching a home improvement show on TV, a workshop at a home improvement center allows you to see the instructions up close and in person as opposed to a television or computer screen. That way you can ask questions or look at the faux paint finish from different angles rather than a two dimensional format.
There are a variety of workshops for women and children too so that the whole family can have something to do. Home improvement center classes would usually conjure up images of burly men rolling up their sleeves and working with heavy tools. However, this need not be the case. Women can learn how to make a picket fence head board and kids can learn how to assemble a bird house from scratch.
Having lots of other people learn with you is also an added advantage as they may ask a question or point out a particular part of the project that you didn’t think of or were hesitant to ask. You can’t get that while fumbling with written instructions or by watching a TV show.
So, the next time you go looking for a plunger or some screws, ask about workshops offered at your home improvement center and get started on the project you have been procrastinating for over a year!
