GPS Tracking
GPS Tracking...Gonna Find Ya
By Jimmy MacLeod
You have certainly seen GPS tracking devices in the movies and on television. Batman was one of the most famous for his use of these handy spy gadgets. As the bad guy or guys are speeding away, a small device is attached to their vehicle or helicopter. Now you know where they are going. Tom Cruise made good use of GPS tracking devices in all of his Mission Impossible movies. Even Austin Powers used a few, with rather comedic results. And while looking through Hollywood’s scope can certainly give a flashier, sexier, and often less realistic picture of how things may actually operate in the world, they are not far off the mark with these doobies.
The global positioning system, or GPS, was created in the seventies by the United States Department of Defense. The first of 24 satellites was launched into space in 1978. The goal was to be able to see everything going on, and just about anywhere. The system was designed so that at least four of the 17 foot satellites are positioned on the horizon at all times. There are six constant orbital patterns these bad boys follow, taking them around the earth is 12 hours.
GPS tracking utilizes this technology to locate and fixate on the exact location of the person, item, or vehicle to which the GPS tracking unit is attached. The satellites are able to follow the signal and transmit visual and logistical date one a regular basis, until the beacon either stops or is turned off.
The Different Ways to Track Your GPS Down
There is more than one type of GPS tracking device. From the uber-sophisticated to the suburban housewife domesticated, a lot of companies have created devices that make the most of the global positioning system technology. One particular type combines the ingenuity with GPS tracking with “texting” to send coordinates in the form of an instant message. Devices are also built into collars in order to track and survey wildlife. Or if you lost the family dog and need to find him. There is low-jack, which certainly comes in handy if you are ever the victim of grand auto theft.
In recent years, On-Star has steadily increased in popularity to the point that the United States Department of Defense is brokering a deal to install On-Star in military vehicles sent overseas. It is no longer a perk of the privileged; Ford, Chrysler, Chevrolet, and other vehicle companies are adding On-Star to everyday cars and trucks. Just as this can be a helpful tool, there are those who would take advantage of the GPS tracking system. It is prudent to be careful and respectful of this amazing technology.
