GPS Receiver

Where to Find Reviews of GPS Receivers
By Jimmy MacLeod

A GPS receiver can be a great tool to have for navigation as these little devices can pinpoint your location on an on-screen map. Whether you are hiking in the wilderness or trying to drive in an unfamiliar city, these interactive maps are a big help.

There are many manufacturers of GPS receivers and literally hundreds of combinations of accessories and features to choose from. Not only that, but you will have to figure out the system’s software and deal with any bugs that might come up. And, like all electronics, you can also get very pricey systems that cost up to $1000. So it is very important you do your research before buying a GPS receiver.

Consumer Reports Magazine

Consumer Reports is probably the most reliable product review magazine available. It does not take advertisements, so its reviews are unbiased. The magazine periodically reviews all kinds of electronics, including GPS receivers, in print and online.

The testers at the magazine buy several brands of the same thing and put them through a battery of tests. They then evaluate the products, telling the reader not just the best value for money, but also the one that is most convenient to use, lightest, most rugged, and so on. The editors boil all this down to a concise article and clear table, so it is easy to compare all products at once.

Online Reviews

Online Reviews come in two types: those done by professionals, and those that are collections of users’ opinions. Some sites combine both.

A good place to start looking for a review of GPS receivers is cnet.com. This site has professional reviewers evaluate the product, but there is also space for individual users to share their opinions. The focus of each review is a score out of a possible ten points. The reviewer gives a score and you also see the average of users’ opinions. Cnet started out as a software review site, so you will see a lot of writing on each receiver’s software and user interface.

Other sites, such as epinions.com, are simply a collection of user reviews. Anyone can log in and post their opinion of the product in question. This can be very good because common problems become very apparent after reading just a few reviews. However, keep in mind that the people that go to the trouble to log their opinion about a GPS receiver are probably the people who are either extremely happy or extremely unhappy. The best thing to do is consult several different reviews.
