GPS Mapping
Mapping the World with GPS Technology
By Jimmy MacLeod
There are certain web sites you can surf, enter an address, and - ta da!- a picture pops up of the place you were searching for. You can zoom in for an up-close look, or pan out a little to see what else is in the neighborhood. Depending on the web site, you may be able to get close enough to differentiate the make and model of the car in the driveway. What you are experiencing is the global position system technology or otherwise known as GPS. Mapping that area or even linking one location to another for driving directions is easier than baking a cake.
GPS mapping is one of the most common uses of the technology that was originally designed by the United States Department of Defense. Since the first of the17 ft. satellites was launched in 1978, the GPS technology has played an important role on both a grand and small scale.
The global positioning system (GPS) was specifically engineered so that at least four of the 24 satellites would be positioned on the horizon at all times. There are six different orbiting patterns that the GPS satellites follow, making a complete trip around the earth every 12 hours. So when you are using GPS to map directions to a concert or new restaurant, you can be assured that the information is accurate.
Road Map to Easy GPS Mapping
You do not have to rely on other web sites and preprogrammed information; you can be your own map maker. Put yourself on the map with software that allows you to create unique, personalized maps with GPS technology. There are also some online GPS mapping programs, not to mention ways to scan and upload your maps into the software. You can even load the GPS mapping software onto your palm pilot. This is the kind of innovation the super geek minds in the Department of Defense could only dream of.
Many vehicles today carry some form of GPS, with mapping and navigational features. This is a very good feature for anyone who gets lost easily, or is incredibly picky about how many tenths of a mile they need to go. There are a myriad of applications for GPS in the military, which is why it was formulated to begin with; to see, not only where the good guys are, but also where the bad guys are lurking.
