Proper Golf Swing
Proper Golf Swing Unique to Every Golfer
By Angus MacLeod
Since most golfers and golf trainers will agree there is no such thing as the perfect swing in golf, it is up to you find the proper golf swing that works for you and then use it consistently. Some swings may look unorthodox and some may be downright ugly, but when used consistently with positive results, it may be the proper golf swing for you.
Common threads in a proper golf swing are the grip, the stance and the alignment of the clubface to the ball. These are not difficult to achieve since they are accomplished while standing still looking down at the ball. Actually drawing the club back and swinging at the ball is where the fun begins.
With all swings in golf proper balance must be maintained from set-up to follow through. With the proper balance maintained through all four main steps, the end result will be inconsistent ball impact resulting in unpredictable results. While the speed of the proper golf swing is important to your driving ability, if balance is maintained, the results can be good for even the slowest swinger.
Four Step to Good Balance
Presuming your grip, stance and clubface is parallel to the ball on address, your weight should be evenly distributed on both feet. At the height of a proper golf swing, 75 percent of your weight should be on the inside of the back foot, left leg for a right-hander and the right leg for lefties.
At impact after the downswing, 75 percent of your weight should be on leading leg and your hips should be slightly ahead of the ball. In a proper golf swing on follow through about 90 percent of your weight should be on the leading leg, forming a straight vertical line from the foot to your head.
The main fundamental in achieving the proper golf swing is consistency. By gripping the club the same way, addressing the ball the same way and swinging the same way each and every time, the consistency in hitting the ball long and straight will soon follow. Many professional golfers develop a routine they use for each time they hit the ball. From the time they address the ball until they strike it can take anywhere from eight to 15 seconds. But it is always the same whether on the tee or in the rough, it is consistent.
