For those people using city utilities, especially water, you have a water flow meter somewhere in or near your house. It is usually referred to as a water meter and it measures how much water has flowed into your home to indicate usage for which you will be charged.

It is designed as an in-line measurement tool and, if properly calibrated, can offer an accurate means of measuring water use. Since utility companies depend on the water flow meter for readings, it is important to the user that it accurate for billing the correct amount. Additionally if you are having water brought in to fill as swimming pool, for example, you will want to insure you are receiving the correct amount. The water flow meter used by the delivery truck tracks how much water had been brought in.

Other uses for a water flow meter include mixing processes where a precise measurement of flow is necessary to mix properly with other liquids. Flow can typically be adjusted either manually or automatically, through the use of a computer-controlled water flow meter, to maintain the correct mixture.

On many farms irrigation is a necessary part of the operation and a water flow meter can help operators regulate the amount of the water is applied to the ground. Too much water can drown the plants and too little can cause them to dry out and die. For them, having a water flow meter connected to their irrigation equipment can be a matter of life or death to their crops and their income for the year.

While typically people think of a water flow meter as measuring usage or the amount of water used, it can also be used to determine the rate at which the water is flowing. This measurement can be taken by the volume of water moving, the speed at which it is moving or the pressure causing it to move. Water pressure measurement methods can be useful in hydroelectric plants to generate electricity. Coupled with the volume flow it can be adjusted to either increase the amount of pressure generated or reduced to lessen the generating capability.

A water flow meter can also be used to regulate the amount of water used to turn a paddle wheel used in such methods as operating a grinding stone, still used in some of today’s milling operations. Instead of having a means of slowing the wheel such as a brake, the water flow volume can be adjusted to change the speed to wheel.
