Track Your Use with a Fuel Flow Meter

When the oil distributor visits your house to fill your tank with heating fuel, it determines how much you owe through the use of a fuel flow meter. This device can track how much fuel has been pumped into your tank, usually in gallon measurement. While measuring the intake quantity of a tank, knowing how much is in it can be even more important.

Depending on a floating gas gauge to measure how much fuel remains in your tank can lead to inaccurate measurements if, for example, the float gets stuck and doesn’t stay in its normal position on top of the liquid. You may not know it has not dropped until the tank is empty. With a fuel flow meter, this probably will not happen as with the right connections it can also tell you how much fuel is being used.

When it is extremely important to know exactly how much fuel remains, in an aircraft for example, a fuel flow meter can offer immediate and precise readings. By monitoring the flow of fuel going to the engine, connected to an appropriately programmed onboard computer, not only will the pilot know how much fuel remains, but also the fuel flow meter can tell them how much they are using.

A fuel flow meter began being used in some vehicles a few years ago, not to replace the floating gas gauge, but to indicate fuel economy. As a car was driven, there would be an indicator to show the current miles per gallon registered while the car was driven in various conditions. This helped people adjust their driving habits to benefit from the best fuel economy they could achieve.

Malfunctions Can Be Determined By Tracking

With a fuel flow meter installed in your boat or airplane, minor malfunctions can be determined. Once you know the typical efficiency of your transport, a fuel flow meter can indicate when usage are outside the normal parameters, giving you an indication there may be problems brewing. This provides the opportunity for preventive maintenance before some major breakdown leaves you stranded.

A fuel flow meter used in manufacturing or other industrial applications are usually inserted into a pipeline in which liquids are moving and measures the rate of flow as it passes through. This can be accomplished by either speed of the flow or the volume, but the use of a fuel flow meter is important for accurate measurements in most applications.
