Many flow meters are designed to adjust the flow of a variety of things from gases to liquids, and some are designed to measure the flow meter peak performance or to limit the flow from going over a preset adjustable peak.

Some utilities adjust the amount of the billing unit charged depending on the maximum used at some point during the billing cycle. Typically, the per unit rate is slightly lowered as the use rises. A meter is designed to set a tab, or needle, at the point at which a flow meter peaks out each cycle. From that reading the rates are determined.

Meters can also be designed to limit the amount of pressure or volume allowed to past beyond a certain amount and when the flow meter peaks it usually reduces the flow or stops it all together. This can work like a safety valve to halt pressure from building up so as to avoid equipment damage or, in some cases, serious injury.

There are also many medical reasons to monitor a flow meter peak input or output, including those with asthma or reactive airways disease. Measuring the output of a person’s lungs can be done when the flow meter peaks at the point additional pressure cannot be induced.

Especially usefully for physicians of asthma patients by obtaining a flow meter peak reading, medication needs can be addressed. As the reading goes down additional medication nay be required, however if the flow meter peak reading indicates, reducing the medication may be order.

For persons with an injury like a damaged lung, for instance, the volume of air being taken in the doctor can obtain a flow meter peak performance to determine the extent of damage done to the lungs and determine the correct course of action for that patient.

Some flow meters serve as a pressure valve and prevent damages. For instance, on a hot water tank in your home once the reading on a flow meter peaks to the present pressure a valve opens and allows steam to escape, preventing damage to the tank. They are also used on gas wells to measure pressure in the lines and when the flow meter peaks, it slows the influx of gas.

Calibration techniques are also necessary to routinely determine that a flow meter is working correctly. This insures the flow meter peak performance is registered for complete accuracy.
