Air Flow Meter Tracks Use and Supply

Whether you work in the medical field or underwater, an air flow meter can be an important piece of equipment. It is important not in just tracking and controlling the flow of air, but also in determining how much air was used over a specific period of time and how much remains in a source.

An air flow meter does just its name implies: it measures the flow of air. It can be done by pressure, also called velocity, or in quantity usually identified in cubic feet, or both. Several uses exist for an air flow meter including on the end of the air hose at the gas station when you have a tire that is low on air pressure. Typically referred to as a tire gauge that measures the pressure in your vehicle’s tire, it can also be used to record how much air was needed to properly inflate the tire.

If you have an aquarium in your home, you can adjust the amount of air interspersed into the water with an air flow meter to insure your aquatic life has enough air on which to live. Too much can cause over oxygenation, resulting in lethargic fish. Too little will likely result in having dead fish.

Meters Used In Combining Compounds

Air flow meters are also useful in industrial applications as knowing how much air pressure you are adding into a mixture, allows proper adjustment for efficient use. For example, mixing air with acetylene produces a flame for burning through metals. This equipment relies on an air flow meter as well as a meter for the acetylene so you can achieve an efficient mixture for burning.

In medical uses, the amount of air getting into a patient’s system is regulated by an air flow meter to insure the proper dosage. Although usually used with medical-grade oxygen, its use with air, too provide adequate room ventilation, is also noted.

The flow of air is also calculated and recorded on other industrial devices including gas wells and air compressors. On a wellhead, there is not supposed to be any air flowing into the pipeline with gas, however mercaptan is added to the colorless, odorless methane gas for it to be detectable. An air flow meter is used to insure the proper amount of this chemical is inducted into the pipeline to create the slight sulfur-like smell without so much as to reduce the efficiency of the gas.
