If any of your friends have dated this guy, get the scoop from them. What was he like as a partner? What caused their break-up? Ask specifically if he was ever abusive to them in any way. If the answer is yes, give this guy a pass. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior.

Safe Dating Tip #2: Meet Somewhere Public for a First Date

When you're meeting someone for the first time, arrange to meet them in a public place like a bar, a restaurant, or a theater. While you're together, watch his behavior. Does he treat you like an equal partner of like an arm decoration? Does he listen to what you have to say and take your input into account? Beware the control freak who wants to be in charge of the entire date.

Try saying "no" to something he suggests and watch his reaction. Does he ignore you? Does he try to talk you into what you don't want to do? Or does he accept your answer? A man who refuses to hear the word "no" in a minor context may ignore it in a more important context as well.

To keep yourself from becoming a victim of Rohypnol, keep an eye on your drink. If you have to leave your drink alone (e.g., while you get up to dance or go to the bathroom), don't drink from the glass you left behind. Order a fresh one instead.

Safe Dating Tip #5: Trust Your Intuition

After the date, consider how you felt about the man. Did you enjoy your time together or did something about him raise your hackles? If you didn't feel safe with your date, trust your intuition and move on to someone better.
