For instance, you can take the plain ball and use some glue to stick some glitter on it, and then wrap a bit of ribbon around the ball decoratively and then secure the ribbon with some glue.

You can basically use whatever materials you like, just make sure that you will be able to keep them on the ball; however, you should also realize that you do not necessarily need to use a ball, as there are many other things that you can use in this regards as well. For instance, you could make snowflakes or make your own tinsel even if you wish – the options are basically endless if you are creative and are willing to take the time.
