There are not many of us who could deny knowing of the word Botox but how many could honestly say that they fully understand what Botox is? Below you will find easy to read information which should help you understand the basics.
The most simple description of Botox is that it is the Botulinum Toxin (poison) which has been specially treated. The Botulinum Toxin is very dangerous as it is poisonous to humans. Many consider it to be one of the most poisonous and dangerous substances known to man.
The product Botox® (registered trade mark) is made from the botulinum toxin A. botulinum toxin A is one of the seven nearotoxins produced by Clostridium botulinum, the same bacterium which caused Botulism in humans. Botulism can, ultimately, cause death as it stops the messages traveling from the brain to the muscles so that they do not contract leading to paralysis.
Being FDA-approved (1989) Botox® is widely accepted as safe and is used extensively in the treatment of involuntary muscle contractions. and spasms in blepharospasm, cervical dystonia and strabismus. Nowadays the term Botox is used widely to describe the facial skin care treatment to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Some time ago Botox Cosmetic was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for aesthetic use. However, due to the associated risk of adverse reactions, it should only be injected once every 3 months using only the minimal dosage. Botox is only available on prescription and should not be used by women who are pregnant or breast feeding and people who are taking anitibiotics.
The cosmetic procedure, often referred to as Botox treatment, should be carried out in a controlled medical environment. The treatment involves the injection of the product (Botox) into the muscles and skin of the face. The fact that it paralyzes the muscles leads to the appearance that even the severest glabellar lines ((frown lines), furrow lines and wrinkles have been removed. However the effects reduce over time and the treatment is temporary.
The cosmetic treatment known as Botox has, over the last few years, has become one of the most popular anti-aging treatments available. It is so popular that we have seen the appearance of the, so called, "Botox Party" where people meet socially to have the treatment. Unfortunately these social events usually include liberal amounts of alcohol which can lead to increased bruising at the injection site. So common are these parties that the FDA has had to issue warnings against them.
Dysport is another branded and incredibly popular product that is a similar product to Botox. However, because the treatment often leaves the face lacking any noticeable expression many people prefer to consider alternative treatments such as microdermabrasion and chemical peels which can be very effective anti-aging treatments that can remove fine lines and wrinkles.
