Belly Dancing Veil
The Importance of the Belly Dancing Veil
By Wendy Simons
The belly dancing veil is a dancing accessory that compliments the dance and its grace will enthrall everyone when the dancer shows those magnificent moves using the veil. Simple turns, traveling steps as well as combinations will enchant the audience and the belly dancing veil is part of a great dance routine that requires the dancer to use the upper body and so forms the backbone of a good workout.
The whole of the upper body as well as the arms and shoulders can be used to express the full range of motion and the belly dancing veil is very helpful in developing the body’s posture as well as shedding upper body tension. The belly dancing veil is useful for the correct exercise of the arm muscles.
The belly dancing veil is also used for veil dances of which there are two types known as the single-veil and double-veil dance. Veil dancing is not an old form of dancing and is relatively new though it has been known to American belly dancers from the time that it appeared on the shores of America around the year 1896 with the first performance of
The Dance of the Seven Veils
The Dance of the Seven Veils; this led belly dancers to take to belly dancing with veils during the early 20th century and has continued up to the present. The belly dancing veil is used in American belly dancing as well as in Egyptian belly dancing.
In the American version of belly dancing with a veil it is swirled and used to mesmerize and is a prop to the belly dancing routine. In the Egyptian version, the dancer walks out and holds the veil and also dances for a minute or two with it and then discards it before finishing the dance.
The belly dancing veil work most often begins with the veil being wrapped around the dancer and is then removed soon after the dance begins and is used for enhancing the performance. The double-veil dancing has only recently been developed in American belly dancing and is an embellishment of the dance performance.
There are many different belly dancing veils that are imported into America from the Middle Eastern countries such as Egypt and sometimes form one half of a set that comprises a skirt and a veil. They may be bought online or from stores and there are many different styles and colors to choose from, with most veils costing between US$40 to approximately US$140.
