Options For Permanent Hair Removal At Home
By Wendy Simons

Many people want to remove unsightly hair, but would prefer to do so in the privacy of their own homes. People wanting permanent hair removal at home have a few options. They should also, however, be alert for scams. As in any other situation, deals that sound too good to be true, probably are.

Electrolysis

One option for permanent hair removal at home is electrolysis. In electrolysis, a super-thin metal probe is placed into the hair follicle, and a small amount of electricity is delivered. This damages the hair follicle, resulting in permanent hair removal. Home electrolysis units are available for around $40-$50. Be sure to select a product that actually involves inserting a probe into the hair follicle. Products that eliminate this step produce only temporary hair removal at best.

Permanent hair removal at home with electrolysis can be tricky. It takes a lot of time to remove hairs one at a time, especially if you have heavy hair growth. Since you are not experienced in this procedure, it is easy to inadvertently damage the skin.

Most sites devoted to permanent hair removal at home suggest that electrolysis be left in the hands of a professional.

Oral Medications

Medications may not produce permanent hair removal at home, but several of them do produce permanent hair reduction by inhibiting the growth of new hair. Most of these medications function by reducing the amount of testosterone or androgen (hormones that cause hair growth) in the system.

All of the medications used to inhibit new hair growth currently require a prescription. Medications your doctor may consider include Propecia, Aldactone, and Daine35. Several of these medications have been tested only on women.

Topical Ointments

So far, Vaniqa is the only topical medication recommended for long-term hair loss. Like the oral medications, it is available only through a prescription. Vaniqua retards new hair growth, and must usually be used in conjunction with another hair control method such as shaving, plucking, etc.

Vaniqa must be applied twice a day. If the product is discontinued, hair will resume growing at its normal rate.

Vaniqa has several limitations. It is only for women and only for hair growth on the face.

Be A Smart Consumer

Since people are so desperate to find methods of permanent hair removal at home, they may be vulnerable to scam artists peddling expensive products that are unproven or don't work. Before you spend a lot of money on a "guaranteed" product, talk to your doctor or dermatologist. If the treatment is legitimate, the medical community will certainly have heard of it.
